Absent Minded Mom.
My story is an ancient one, as all of mine would be. SPC Ryan still recalls it. Frequently. In nightmares. Wait. What is the statute of limitations on child neglect?
Allow me to set the mood with the angelic face of my then two-year-old blue-eyed baby boy. We were getting ready to move into our new home and I had been watching the adds for a microwave to go on sale. As nature would have it, the sale occurred during the monsoon season, on the Other Side of Phoenix in a heavy traffic area. We made it safely inside the store before the rain hit, my two babies snug as bugs in a rug in their double stroller. No such luck returning to the van. We were in the middle of a micro-burst, rain pouring down in sheets and wind. I parked the stroller right next to the sliding door opening of the big old van and proceeded to strap baby girl in the back seat when I heard Ryan crying out,
Just a minute Ry, let me get the baby buckled in!
The desperate call for help trailed off. Well, that’s odd, I think to myself as I turn around to pick up Ryan.
The stroller is GONE. With my first born child, my 29 hour labor! The microburst had swooped right under the sun cover and blown the stroller away, across an enormous, busy parking lot.
Seeing how he is a health 6’4”, 220 pounds now, and carries a big gun, I would say that he survived with no ill effects. His story is bit different, involving being swept across a freeway. On a happy note, that microwave is still working!
