Mama Guilt Mondays

Absent Minded Mom.

My story is an ancient one, as all of mine would be.  SPC Ryan still recalls it.  Frequently.  In nightmares. Wait.  What is the statute of limitations on child neglect?

scan0002

Allow me to set the mood with the angelic face of my then two-year-old blue-eyed baby boy.  We were getting ready to move into our new home and I had been watching the adds for a microwave to go on sale.  As nature would have it, the sale occurred during the monsoon season, on the Other Side of Phoenix in a heavy traffic area.  We made it safely inside the store before the rain hit, my two babies snug as bugs in a rug in their double stroller.  No such luck returning to the van.  We were in the middle of a micro-burst, rain pouring down in sheets and wind.  I parked the stroller right next to the sliding door opening of the big old van and proceeded to strap baby girl in the back seat when I heard Ryan crying out,

MAMA!!!

Just a minute Ry, let me get the baby buckled in!

MAMA!!!

The desperate call for help trailed off.  Well, that’s odd, I think to myself as I turn around to pick up Ryan.

The stroller is GONE.  With my first born child, my 29 hour labor!  The microburst had swooped right under the sun cover and blown the stroller away, across an enormous, busy parking lot.

Seeing how he is a health 6’4”, 220 pounds now, and carries a big gun, I would say that he survived with no ill effects.  His story is bit different, involving being swept across a freeway.  On a happy note, that microwave is still working!

Oh, Deb, they'll be telling this one around the campfire a hundred years from now. "Remember when great-great-grandma Deb threw her son into the eye of a tornado?" LOL!! Once, a million years ago, when I was little, my Mom took the three of us grocery shopping. When she was done, she stuffed us and the groceries into our old Olds. She got in and drove (in a very lead-footed Texan fashion) across the parking lot. I was yelling, "MOM! MOM!" and she was saying something like, "Pamela, we do NOT yell in the car." And I said, "But Kyle is hanging off the door!" I guess the door didn't latch and he was holding on to the handle when it opened. No harm done, except to his tennis shoes which lost the upper layer. hahah! Ah, sweet childhood. :) xoxox

Oh I am laughing so hard and can see it all happening in my head!!! Poor little baby Ryan. That must have been the turning point in his life that caused him to seek out adventure..Ha ha!! Growing up in Yuma whenever we had those huge wind storms my dad would put one of his huge shirts on us kids backwards, put us on a scooter and send us sailing down the street. What happy times those were.
You have put a huge happy smile on my face this morning, Darling Deb!

HEHEHEHEHE!
Nothing gets past that beautiful smart FPOT of yours. HAHAHAHA!

I love you.

I actually had to force myself to post that comment after I read you post, hahahaha! It is so far removed. AAAAAHHHHH!

Ah Deborah you are indeed fantastic and Ryan is just wonderful. You give me so much hope.

A shining star indeed! See what happens when mothers act normally instead of thinking such events are life changing and catastrophic and therefore require 10 visits to the psycho-thera-pest?

I like that he carries a big gun. I went to work today and my lunch bag had the initials NRA. HAHAHAHA!

That would haunt me forever...as either the child in the stroller or the mother of the child!! At the time I'm sure you were shaking like a leaf!!!

And then...runningto get your babyboy back and having to leave the car with the little one ! Ughh...I feel it in my stomach right now !
I once packed the car to go across the country and had the two in the back seat and got myself next to driver and he started the car and drove it out of the parkinglot...and then: I realised that my new born baby was still lying in his crib in his babyroom in the locked down house !
It seems I have never forgivven myself for this neglect, have to live this life all through with it...And the young man ? He still mananges to sleep through a full day of noisy housesounds, but then off course: he works late nights...still a bit different also.
I love your garden posts, dear friend.
One silent wednesday before Easter is a good spiritual day...enjoy...and inhale/exhale/relax...release all tension...

Wahahahahahaha!!! Yes, I'm sure the story grew and grew every time he told it. But see? You can turn around and tell him that's WHY he grew up into the brave, strappin' young man that he is. He should be THANKING you for shoving him into the freeway! Hahahaha! Loved the story, Deborah.
