Dear Daddy

Thank you.
Thank you for not leaving us right now.
Thank you for the words of love that I have tucked away
deep within my heart
that will remain with me long after you have left this world.
Today you spoke of the war, two Christmases you spent overseas...
bitter cold, that Christmas in 1944 in Belgium.
You were shot in Germany.
You said that God was always with you.
1945 - you came home on the Queen Elizabeth in a body cast.
You were on the ship when FDR died.
All these years I have never heard you speak of the war.
Mommy gave you a small Catholic Mass book
with a metal pocket cover that traveled
half way round the world with you.
Today you told me
that you are sending that precious book to Iraq...
to the grandson who bears the Family Name,
if only as his middle name.
The spiraling threads of love continue on,
connecting us, binding us all together...
Blessed be God forever.
Blessed be His Holy Name.

Thankyou for your sweet words! They brought a amile to my face & a giggle that could not but burst into life :) How wistful & elevating your blog is. When i thought of your son in the war, i thought of this quote, 'eternal vigilance is the price for freedom'. extraordinary courage blesses the whole world over!
